Important Update: Winter Storm hours – Saturday, January 24 & Sunday, January 25, 2026
Due to the forecasted heavy snowfall from Winter Storm Fern, which is expected to bring 8+ inches of accumulation (and potentially more) to the Louisville area this weekend, we are prioritizing the safety of our team and customers.
We will close early at 6:00 PM this Saturday, January 24.
We will remain closed all day Sunday, January 25.
Normal business hours will resume on Monday, January 26, weather permitting. We will monitor conditions closely and provide updates if anything changes.
Closure of Rocksport Climbing Gym
Rocksport Climbing Gym has played a pioneering role in the rock climbing industry since its founding in 1996. For three decades, it has served as a hub for climbers seeking both training and development opportunities. The facility was originally established by Rob Butsch, who created an environment dedicated to fostering rock climbing skills. Following Rob Butsch's passing, ownership transitioned to Ralph Pettit, Jr. and Dale Pettit, who undertook significant modernization efforts. Their vision led to a newly designed facility, which reopened in December 2019 and continued to serve the climbing community.
Operational Changes and Relocation Plans
During the mandatory Covid shutdown, Rocksport Climbing Gym retained its existing staff, demonstrating a commitment to the team and community. Looking ahead, the gym is actively seeking a more affordable location, preferably closer to town, to continue its mission. Unfortunately, efforts to purchase the current building from the landlord have been unsuccessful. As a result, it is with regret that the gym will cease operations at its present location as of February 28, 2026.
